OKLAHOMA CITY — Enid’s Haley Hibbets capped off her high school career as a state champion.
Hibbets collected the Class 6A No. 1 Singles State Championship, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, over Bartlesville’s Abby Shelley Saturday at the Oklahoma Tennis Center.
The Enid senior made school history, earning Enid’s first girls No. 1 singles state champion since Tiffany George accomplished the feat in 1988.
“It feels really good,” Hibbets said after the win. “I felt pretty good. Obviously, I was pretty nervous going into the final, with it being my senior year and my last chance.”
Hibbets took the first set but suffered a 3-6 loss in the second set. Hibbets said she just told herself to stay calm and trust her abilities heading into the third set.
“I’m thinking I have nothing to lose,” she said. “This is the best I’ve ever done at state either way. Relax, play my game and just do what I know to do.”
Enid coach Wade Rogers said Hibbets battled in the state championship, especially bouncing back after losing that second set.
“She’s been really focused this tournament,” Rogers said. “There are times in the match where you have ups and downs. She weathered them all, and she played great.
“Tennis is a bunch of momentum swings. Haley could’ve easily said, ‘Ah, too bad,’ and gone down that path. She understands this is a three-set match. We can turn it around, and she did.”
OBA’s Reagan Miller secured seventh place in Class 5A No. 1 Singles after collecting the 6-2, 6-1 win over Duncan’s Tiana Braxton.
OBA’s Maddie Edwards collected eighth place in Class 5A No. 2 singles.
Chisholm’s Mayecee Landwehr took home seventh place in Class 4A No. 2 singles after beating Metro Christian’s Allison Brown, 6-0, 6-0.
